Total Knee Replacement (TKR)
Surface replacement for advanced knee arthritisWhat Is Done During Surgery?
- Resurfacing, Not Removing the Whole Knee: Only the worn-out, rough cartilage surfaces at the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia) are precision-trimmed.
- Smooth Biocompatible Implant: The damaged surfaces are capped with smooth metal alloy components and a medical-grade gliding spacer that recreates natural, pain-free joint motion.
- Deformity Correction: Bow-leg or knock-knee alignment is corrected during surgery so weight is distributed evenly across the leg.
Recovery Milestones
- Day 1 After Surgery: Stand and walk a few steps beside the bed with a walker and physiotherapy guidance.
- Weeks 2–3: Stitches/staples are removed; transition from a walker to a walking stick and climb stairs with support.
- Weeks 4–6: Walk independently indoors and outdoors, resume light daily routines, and drive once knee control is strong.
