Sports Injuries & Ligament Recovery Guide

From ACL tears and locked meniscus injuries to shoulder dislocations and ankle sprains—learn how ligament injuries are diagnosed, treated with keyhole arthroscopy, and rehabilitated back to peak performance.

1. ACL & Meniscus Injuries of the Knee

Recognizing an ACL vs. Meniscus Tear

  • ACL Tear Symptoms: Often starts with an audible "pop" during a twist or landing, followed by knee swelling within 2–6 hours. Once initial pain settles after 2 weeks, the knee feels unstable or "gives way" when turning quickly or walking downstairs.
  • Meniscus Tear Symptoms: The meniscus is the C-shaped shock-absorbing cartilage pad. A tear causes localized joint-line pain, clicking, or mechanical locking where the knee gets stuck and cannot straighten fully.
  • Why Ignoring an Unstable ACL Is Risky: Repeated giving-way episodes tear the intact meniscus and scrape articular cartilage, leading to early knee osteoarthritis in your 30s or 40s.

When Is Keyhole Surgery Needed?

  • Grade 1 & 2 Partial Sprains: Treated without surgery using a hinged knee brace, swelling control, and structured quadriceps/hamstring rehabilitation.
  • Complete (Grade 3) ACL Tear in Active Individuals: Treated with Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction using a strong tendon graft through tiny buttonhole incisions.
  • Meniscus Repair Over Removal: Whenever a meniscus tear is in a vascular zone, we suture and repair the cushion rather than trimming it out, protecting your knee for decades.

2. Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation & Rotator Cuff Tears

Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation (Bankart Tear)

  • Why It Slips Out Repeatedly: The first time a shoulder dislocates during a fall or sport, the front bumper ring of cartilage (the labrum/Bankart lesion) tears off the socket.
  • High Recurrence in Young Adults: In patients under age 30, a torn labrum rarely heals back to the bone in the right position on its own, causing the shoulder to dislocate again even while throwing, swimming, or turning in bed.
  • Keyhole Bankart Repair: Arthroscopic suture-anchor repair reattaches the bumper to the socket through 3 tiny keyhole punctures, permanently restoring stability.

Rotator Cuff & Gym Tendon Injuries

  • Rotator Cuff Tear: Causes weakness when lifting the arm sideways/overhead and deep night pain that prevents sleeping on the affected side.
  • Tennis & Golfer's Elbow: Overuse tendon micro-tears around the elbow causing sharp pain when gripping, lifting a cup, or wringing clothes.
  • Ankle Ligament Instability: Repeated ankle twists on uneven ground; managed with proprioceptive balance training and ankle bracing.

3. Roadmap: Return to Sports After ACL / Ligament Surgery

Milestone-based progression so you return stronger and prevent re-injury
Weeks 1 – 2

Extension & Early Walking

Focus on getting the knee 100% straight, reducing swelling with ice, performing static quad sets, and walking with a knee brace.

Weeks 3 – 6

Full Bending & Normal Gait

Gradually bend past 110–120 degrees, wean off the brace for indoor walking, and begin stationary cycling and closed-chain squats.

Months 3 – 4

Strength & Straight-Line Jogging

Single-leg balance drills, gym leg-press strengthening, and flat-track jogging once thigh muscle strength reaches 75% of the other leg.

Months 6 – 9

Agility & Competitive Sports

Cutting, pivoting, hop testing, and clearance to return to competitive football, kabaddi, cricket, or basketball.
